The application for candidacy for the Primary Years Programme (PYP) at ACS Doha International School has been accepted. ACS Doha is now recognised as an IB Candidate school for the Primary Years Programme as of 6th June 2016. Only schools authorised by the IB Organization can offer any of its academic programmes including the Primary Years Programme (PYP), the Middle Years Programme (MYP), or the Diploma Programme (DP). ACS Doha will now offer all three of these programmes as it designs its high quality teaching and learning towards a fully coherent and aligned curriculum. For further information about the IB and its programmes, please visit their website.
ACS Hillingdon students, aged 9-13, were recently visited by Thomas Briggs, from the Bletchley Park Enigma Outreach programme. Mr Briggs brought along a genuine, working Enigma machine to the school.
Enigma machines were used in World War II by the Nazis to encode military communications. Their complex method of encoding was eventually decrypted by first Polish, and later, British intelligence, at Bletchley Park. This has been the subject of much interest lately, not least following the movie ‘The Imitation Game’- in fact, the very machine used in the film was the one brought to ACS Hillingdon.
The interactive workshop introduced codes and ciphers that have been used throughout history, explored Bletchley Park’s role in World War II, and culminated in a demonstration of the Enigma machine.
Last month, we were delighted to welcomed students and staff from Dr Alpo School, Namibia, as part of our on-going partnership. Eight students and two teachers from Dr Alpo Mauno Mbamba Junior Secondary School, in Rundu, Namibia, visited for a week of cultural and academic exchange.
During the visit, the group from Dr Alpo enjoyed Dormitory life, participated in High School lessons, taught younger students, gave presentations and made use of the campus facilities. They learned about tertiary education at home in Namibia and elsewhere. The students, who were visiting the UK for the first time, and their ACS student hosts, also enjoyed visits to London and the coast to experience some of UK’s cultural attractions, including the London Eye, Buckingham Palace, Changing the Guard, and The Lion King Musical at the Lyceum Theatre.
Over 500 parents, teachers and students recently celebrated our international identity by taking part in the school’s annual, action-packed International Fair.
The Fair, organised by the ACS Egham PTO, brought together the whole school community to raise funds for local charities and enjoy a variety of food, drink and traditions from every corner of the globe.
To open the event and showcase our international community, students of over 35 different nationalities dressed in their national costume and displayed their flags for an International Parade. Throughout the day, guests and students tried their hand at traditional games, sampled local cuisines and tried on cultural dresses.
