The Celebration Sculpture
The sculpture named 'Celebration' was commissioned in 1997 and delivered to Cobham in Summer 1998.
The ACS Cobham community takes immense pride in our rich heritage and the symbols that bind us together. We recently unearthed a little-known story of artistic inspiration and visionary leadership that graces our campus. Back in 1997, the seeds of an artistic endeavor were sown when Tom Lehman, our esteemed Head of ACS Cobham at the time, along with the dedicated Board of Directors, envisioned a masterpiece that would stand as an emblem of inspiration at the heart of our campus. Their vision came to life in the summer of 1998 with the installation of the 'Celebration' sculpture. The mastermind behind this creation is none other than Gary Lee Price, a celebrated American sculptor whose works echo in galleries and spaces across the United States. The sculpture, today, has become more than just an installation at ACS Cobham, it's the pulsating heart of our thriving learning community.
To be able to fly is so symbolic of freedom and possibilities; and flying around a sphere, to me, represents the joy we experience in this life, and in the sphere of worlds to come! Imagine a world without limits and without boundaries.Imagine an existence full of self-confidence, self-esteem and not only tolerance, but love for others regardless of colour, socio-economic or any other standing. To me that is what the future holds. That is what children represent and that is the type of world I would like to help others imagine so it can come to pass.I believe sculpture can have a tremendous, uplifting influence on us and so I envision this piece as a large, life-size work where its message can ring loud and clear. ‘Celebration!’ is just that, a celebration of life and aspirations.
