ACS schools have extensive outdoor spaces and athletic facilities that afford students and teachers excellent fresh-air environments in which to learn and play. Our campuses have access to fields, parks and playgrounds that support our students’ health, well-being and personal development.
Many teachers are Forest School-certified instructors, who lead inspirational learning that offers opportunities for holistic growth that supports play, exploration and well-managed risk taking. Forest School activities develop confidence and self-esteem through learner inspired, hands-on experiences in a natural setting. Inspired by Scandinavian open-air culture (friluftsliv, or free air life), Forest School methodologies will play an important role in curriculum development at a time when outside learning is especially important.
ACS grounds provide living natural laboratories that support sustainability education and advance ACS expected school-wide learning results through outdoor learning. We expect students to grow as caring contributors who are sustaining the ecological systems and resources that support life. Teachers will be working together to maximise outdoor learning across the curriculum, challenging students to develop practical and personal skills as well as academic knowledge.
School gardens engage students AND provide fresh vegetables to eat! The UK’s rich resource of royal gardens, parks and horticultural learning centres are close by, too. Our Duke of Edinburgh Award adventure programmes will also be continuing with a difference.
